Barbie as Art

Remember the days when Barbie ruled your world? She made everything just that little bit more pink and sparkly...well now she has made the art world just that little bit more fabulous thanks to artist Jocelyne Grivaud.

To celebrate the doll's 50th anniversary, Jocelyne took her favourite childhood doll as her muse, and transformed her into artistic icon. From the Statue of Liberty, to Mona Lisa, to a Warhol icon, the images salute the work of the great artists and childhood joy!

Jocelyne said of her work on her website: "Here’s my personal contribution as a birthday present to my mascot, Barbie, superimposed on the vision of artists whose work I greatly appreciate.
Let me thank them all for creating such intense pictures. Many thanks to Ruth Handler for creating this dolly model that enraptured me throughout my childhood."

A definite favourite of ours is the Barbie Beatles poster. It just fills you with that childhood reminder of the Barbie fantasy - rainbows, hearts and all things pink.

Inspired by Milton Glaser's poster of Bob Dylan

Inspired by Man Ray
But Jocelyne also takes Barbie down a different, more serious route, making her into a model of fine art. It's so different yet it truly works.

She comments on her Barbie version of the Statue Of Liberty - "The idea of Barbie enlightening the world. It was a charming idea." As we all know, she did, for many of us girls in youth.

Long live Barbie we say!

Full Circle Autumn/Winter 2012 Launch

Do your clothes tell a story? At Deer Brains, we're pretty sure our's do, so when we were invited to Full Circle's Autumn/Winter 2012 launch we were drawn to the idea of their latest line as a 'storybook of style'.
The evening even came complete with a storyteller, who introduced the clothing to us, in a flurry of descriptive words. She weaved in and out of the mannequins, while explaining a story about a girl, in reference to the flowing garments and print-designs around her. Definitely unusual, but so were the designs.

Us Deer Brainers, were most taken in by Full Circle's stark use of colour and their passion for prints. The capes and coats were definite eyecatchers thanks to the use of bold red, green and blue fabrics. And the prints were inspired by everything from the architecture of religious temples to feminine floral motifs.

Another notable addition to the line was the use of striking slits in long, flowing skirts and the use of layering. Teaming feminine, chiffon-like fabrics with heavy-knit jumpers made the outfits look feminine but still cosy.

Check out Full Circle for more information and look out for these designs in stores later in the year.

Baby's On Fire x Stylestalker

The new Stylestalker collection and lookbook, as modelled by Anja Konstantinova, pioneer of the white brow.

Shot by Darren McDonald and of course styled by Sue-Ann San and Rachel Zeilic, this is probably their most romantic output to date. Nice.

Victate Summer '11

We were thrilled to receive a t-shirt from Vicatates newest collection which we absolutely love here at Deer Brains. After buying this bag a few months ago we were keen to find out more about this up and coming brand...

Our new standard of tees, weighing at a premium 215gsm ringspun tubular body, full neck and shoulder taping 100% cotton T-shirts is really something we are proud of. This is compared to our previous 160gsm ringspun non-tubular body, neck taped, tapered sleeves. The fit is a tiny bit more regular compared to our previous tees but we love it, the photos below are those tees. Some might think why we decided to get heavier when its now summer and getting warm, but we believe people will really love the quality of these new tees and the extra weight doesn't turn it into a down-jacket, it just feels nicer and drops well on the body.

After receiving their crocodile print tee we were very impressed with the quality of the material as they state the quality of their new tees and extra body feels nicer against the skin and drops well on the body.

Coming from a design background we were also loving their business cards with quality print and card material with little raised embossed V's...We are excited to see where this brand develops as every drop so far has been stepping up from strength to strength.

Other t-shirts in the latest drops are as follows:

Untitled x Stolen Girlfriends Club

One of our favourite clothing brands just took the fashion show to another level: the supermarket. New Zealand's Stolen Girlfriends Club teamed up with Red Bull and staged a flashmob style ready-to-wear show in the aisles of an Auckland supermarket last week.

Now that's the way to flip the middle finger up at invite-only exclusivity and reclaim the fashion showcase. As always SGC, we show you love.

BRAND NEW: Tarquin and Petunia

This webstore literally only went live about a few minutes ago. It is an online fashion store created by a South London couple. It features some knock out one off pieces for both sexes.

They've taken inspiration from the 80's to avoid the droid-like rails and repetitive high street robots that have swept the country. T&P items are all handpicked with love and promise to deliver precious vintage goods at extremley reasonable prices.
