Kharma NYC

Kele from Kharma NYC sent me over an e-mail last night explaining who he was and what he did for this project. I was drawn to it straight away as it's something I am very passionate about, 1...design, 2....collaborating to bring all ideas together and 3...charity. This is one of those projects that you can tell they've worked amazingly hard on and one that I want to be a part of! Owwww.





Collaborating with 8 other designers including Mario Hugo, Non-Format, No Pattern and Emil Kozak among others, we asked each designer to take a step back from their commercial work and design a print for a cause personally significant to them. Each designer chose an organization and cause that has had an impact on their lives, and then created a hand-printed, limited numbered tshirt print inspired by the cause.

The “This is What Matters to Me” project is the first of an ongoing series by our collaborative, cause-driven brand, KharmaNYC. This is the first of many unique collaborations to come.

Brenneriveien are an award winning collective of freelancers focusing on illustrative image-making that crosses the border between illustration and graphic design. With long experience in both they approach each brief from an art directors point of view trying to create the appropriate style for each new project. They are trend sensitive but base our work on high quality craftsmanship and good ideas that hopefully never goes out of style.

My favourite bit of work of theirs is the motif series.

This brand is amazing, from the word go I was captivated by their website and since then the slick creative designs of their t-shirts have made them even more compelling.
I have just purchased their lion t-shirt and I'm quite excited for it to arrive, either my life is hella boring at the moment or this brand is just so top notch that it makes you feel like that.


Whether you're into design, clothing, good concepts or all three I highly recommended you take a sneak.

The Bottle Top Project

A friend of ours has succeeded in creating his own full animation using only his garage wall and bottle tops. I usually find stuff like this quite nervy to watch as you always see a casual but obvious fuck up. With Matt's work there is not one flaw and everything in it is easily accounted for, i.e the Pacman and the Mario etc.

I really do truly think it's brilliant and I admire the time and effort put into this.

We already tweeted about it and put it on our Facebook, but we think it deserves a blog post too so that all our new readers and look back on our archive and see it too.

My global concept is called "Retrofuturs": mix the past, the present, the future and shake it! Before this concept has been contextualized with music (personal compilations with golden oldies, pop, electronic music etc...) with objects (lamps with retrofuturs graphics) and comics for my co-workers (it may be this which triggered the graphic concept).

I don't have training in graphics but have read extensively. It began in November 2008 during my daily time of the train. I started by collage and have evolved to a minimalist approach in information design. In this context, I work with a simple background and a helvetica new font (maybe I am influenced by that kind of graphic work). The other elements of my toolbox are repetition, dots and colors. The last two are very interesting in representing time in the poster space.

I'm a a mixer. I like to work with vintage photos and diagrams. You can work easily with them, you just have to fit them in the design you want. I've been collecting them since 2003, classifying and have become a specialist at finding almost anything on anything. I'm amazed with the power of the internet, people are creating a gigantic work of memories, it's maybe why I like to work with vintage pics. At the beginning, the concept of my old blog was just to make a collection of the different websites I have seen in the internet space.


My academic training in science has influenced my work. I always put meanings first and graphic design after. It's the reason why I always make a place for text elements. My process can be summarized as: put a code inside another one, shake it and see what happens. In this case the relationship between text and image is an interesting field to investigate.

Sometimes I make an absurd graphic, or sometimes an idea just comes into my head, and sometimes I make an activist work (against creationnists, the Monsanto firm, etc...). Graphics are a weapon to change ideas (it may be commonplace to say). The other influences regarding my work are music, news and scientific podcasts.

My name is Elise Roese (b.1986), and I am a designer based in São Paulo, Brazil, graduated in Interface Design, at Senac-SP in 2008. Worked at Estúdio Colletivo during 2006-2008, working directly with fashion brands. Now I am currently working as a freelancer, focused on digital/graphic design and art. And I also participate on collective called Sovereign that is focused on art direction and experimental projects.
