Tancredi by James Palumbo

Think Ministry Of Sound and you think dance music. Think James Palumbo, co-founder and chairman of Ministry Of Sound, and you think…satirical novels. A bit of an unexpected turn of events eh? But nonetheless interesting.

Tancredi is James’ second novel, after his acclaimed debut Tomas. His books focus on the dark satire of consumerism, mass media and modern culture, but set in a futuristic world.

Tancredi is the hero of the novel, a young boy who wants to save the world, unlike the mass-media munching ‘morons’ he is surrounded with. Everyone around him suffers from ‘the incurable disease of short-term memory’ promoted by modern living, but he has bigger and better ideas to strike out on his own, against it all. This animation gives you a taster:

It’s odd, I’m not going to lie, but thought-provoking and full of fantastic illustrations. Expect a futuristic sci-fi novel meets The Little Prince and Gulliver's Travels. Kooky huh?

Tancredi is available in stores today. For more information, go to http://www.jamespalumbo.com/ or view the interview below.

Making Lists

Oh, hi.

Since I was six I have written hundreds of lists. Lists like:

My favourite colours in order of how much they affect me while I sleep,
Yellow, blue, grey, peach

Nicest smiles I saw today,
The man on the bike who waved at his friend, dad, that cat that always follows me to school, the old lady the lives near me, that girl who walks right on the edge of the path with her arms out

What to write about when I’m older and wiser and better at this,
Love, metaphors, rainbows, lists

By writing these lists and keeping them in a big book called "All The Lists I Have Ever Made", I am able to find myself and remember all the things that I like (and some I don't, too) whenever I feel a little bit lost. (It happens to the best of us.)

I am definitely not the only person who likes to write lists. One of my personal favourite list makers is Erland Loe’s unnamed protagonist in the gorgeous “Naïve, Super”:

This young man is suffering from a crisis of self, and he writes lists to try to get himself back on the right track - to remember who he is and who he wants to be:

A few weeks ago, I went to the Saatchi Gallery (oh, it’s gorgeous, if you’ve never been, you must go. If only for the Oil Room and its amazing bookshop) and bought myself a copy of listography.com’s “My Future Listography, All I Hope To Do In Lists” – a book for the most discerning list fans.

Of all the books in the Listography series, this one is particularly good because it includes gems like:

Good deeds you long to perform,
Future halloween costume ideas,
Things to do when you're feeling down,
Changes you wish for the world
The things you hope to experience before you die

and:

Every day I flick through and fill out a list or two, and will return over and over, whenever I feel like I have forgotten myself and need a little reminder. If you, like me, love lists, get this book, it is perfect.

What's the thing you hate the most about the one you love?

survey took place which was conducted behalf of Hodder to support the release of Christina Hopkinson warm, witty novel, The pile of stuff at the bottom of the stairs, about just this. In it we follow Mary’s life as she struggles to understand what it is exactly about Joel that make her angry - is it the way he doesn’t quite reach the laundry basket when he throws his dirty clothes at it or the fact that he never completely empties the dishwasher, but leaves the ‘difficult’ things for her to put away.

So, what we want to know is what's the thing you hate the most about the one YOU love?

Boobs in 3-D

The temptation was to write a long piece justifying our creation of 3DD. We could have thrown in some academic analysis on the prominent role of the nude in the history of art and elaborate on the ways that 3DD advances that canon. We might have pointed out that the beautiful images of natural breasts in all shapes and sizes are a wonderful celebration of real women in all their glory. Or we could have revealed in the universal truth that looking and talking about boobs is just a lot of fun.

But that would be to complicate something that can be said in four words.

I wonder how many guys will be adding this to their Christmas list?

Creating totes with quotes from books, candles with type, mugs from the ever beloved 'penguin books' absolutely adorable. Reminds me of Beatrix Potter.

How To Be A Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul

How to be a graphic designer, without losing your soul
By Adrian Shaughnessy
Laurence King Publishing, £17.95

This book is created to help you become effective, efficient and 'tidy' within graphic design. I found alot of this book was teaching me things that my lectuiers never really touched on, maybe that was why they wanted us to buy the books so they didn't have to go through it all? I do strongly believe that if you're passionate about design or even anything really that you can self teach yourself :)
