Temple Interview

We managed to take a moment out of Temple's free time to get a sneaky interview, making waves from Brighton that have now taken him to London Pro-active is one word to describe him! Stick on his brilliant High Emotions mix and have a read!

Deerbrains Hi Temple, can you tell us about yourself?
Temple Hello. My name is Simon and I live in London
DB Can you tell us what got you interested in Ding and how long have you been doing it?
Temple I’ve been DJ'ing for just over 8 years now. I first caught interest when I heard some scratching near the end of Massive Attack’s ‘Unfinished Sympathy’ and was like, wow that sounds sick. I want to do that. I was about 14 at the time. I borrowed some decks from Dad’s work and learnt to beat match pretty quickly at the age of 19 and got my first set of decks shortly after that. 2 SL1210’s with a Pioneer DJM300, not bad for a first setup!
DB What’s the best thing about DJ'ing?
Temple Expressing myself. I want to share the music that I love with as many people as I possibly can. I’ve been known to have a boogie in the booth whilst playing, I just can’t help it!
DB As an ex Brighton local and resident at AKA AKA ROAR night, what’s the bass music scene like in Brighton? Brighton’s music scene generally speaking is seen as quite indie and alternative, has there been a move away from this perception with the growth of bass music within the UK?
Temple It’s come on leaps and bounds over the last couple of years, the scene in Brighton is really strong at the moment with the likes of Lorca, Leon Vynehall, Greymatter, Ital Tek, Guy Andrews and Murder He Wrote all emerging from the seaside city. Also man like Donga, who is also an incredible DJ, runs one of the best labels in the country, Well Rounded Records. In terms of club nights, AKA AKA ROAR! is the best night in Brighton by far. End of.
DB You recently become a broadcast assistant at Rinse FM, pretty sweet place to be around! How did this come about, has it influenced your DJ'ing at all?
Temple I have actually had to quid my Saturday shift at Rinse due to my new full-time job. Kinda sucks as I only did it for 5 weeks and had such an amazing time working there. In terms of influencing my DJ'ing, it didn’t really. What it did do is expose me brand new unheard/unreleased material, which is always a good thing. And yes it’s a pretty cool place to be, live and direct from Rinse FM’s headquarters.
DB Whats your view on the Post-Dubstep Future-Garage movement that’s in full swing right now, is it the natural progression of Dubstep and UK bass music?
Temple I don’t have one. These terms don’t really mean anything to me or anybody else. What I do like is that the underground scene that is happening right now has become more open-minded about dance music.
DB  You seem to have good ties with the guys at Night Slugs, what’s it like interning with them?
Temple I actually know L-Vis 1990 from school so they were happy to have me intern with them, as they already know me. Just like the Rinse job it’s been great working with them. Alex (Bok Bok) has been really supportive of me as well; answering any questions I may have regarding the label, promotion, record pressing costs, things like that. It’s interesting to hear their views on the underground music scene today.
DB Have you ever considered a cross over to producing?
Temple Yes, I’ve tried, and failed miserably. I don’t have any studio equipment up in London at the moment so I’m going to put the whole production thing on hold until September time. By then I would of saved up enough money to buy a Roland Juno 106, some decent monitors and possibly a Roland TR-707. Only then I will crack on with my productions. For now I’m just going to concentrate on my DJ'ing cus that’s what I enjoy the most.
DB Vinyl or digital?
Temple Both. I use Serato most of the time, but I still buy records on the regular. My latest purchase was New York Transit Authority ‘Off The Traxx’. There is no better feeling than buying a record, whatever it may be.
DB What does the rest of 2012 have lined up for Temple?
Temple This year is looking pretty exciting. Playing at various nights in a round London and am also going to be playing at Dimensions festival in Croatia with my beloved AKA fam, so excited about that! Also I am looking to start a small night somewhere in London with AKA co-founder Nick who also recently moved to the big smoke. I have no idea where or when just yet; I feel I need to establish myself as a London resident before I start making plans. By the end of the year I’ll hopefully have a couple of half-decent tracks under my belt, which will lead me into 2013 nicely.

You can catch Temple on FacebookTwitter & Soundcloud! He also has a blog which is full of some solid content, check it out Here!

Tramms

We recently discovered Tramms who are a pleasantly refreshing band from the south coast, they have already been spotlighted by Vice and played alongside some of the Italian Beach Babes roster yet they are barely a year old! It's clear to see that they are created waves which aren't all that surprising with the likes of Klaus and its driving grungey bass line taking you to a slightly hypnotic state. Expect big things from them this 2012 with rumours of a tour and plans to record this spring.

"we're a 3 piece from Chichester in the UK. Our EP was recorded with Rory Attwell last November after we emailed him some demos we'd done on our phones. we're recording another E.P  at the end of may, with a plan to release it in the summer." Tramms 2012

Be sure to follow them on Facebook and check out their Soundcloud for new tracks.

One To Watch: YADI

She’s a 23 year old array of contradictions, the product of a genetic cocktail that mixes a North African cultural penchant on her father's side with Nordic and classical heritage from her mother’s side.

Born in South London - her music is an aural kaleidoscope of influences, with propulsive and instinctive tribal drums mixed with meticulous wordplay.

Here’s a Soundcloud download link to her new track 'Sahara Heart'. Enjoy!

Ryan Leslie "Fly Together"

Ryan Leslie is a genius. Seriously. Pretty sure he graduated from Harvard University at the age of 18 or something ridiculous like that. Despite his 'in the making' video's from his arts production company 'Next Selection' that blew up artists like Cassie (who P.Diddle supposedly stole from this incredible specimen of a ma) Mr. Leslie is a pretty elusive artist.

What do we mean?

We'll his albums and release are as rare as the late MJ's and his shows are a hybrid fusion of chest revealing, live band, cinematic, hip-hop infused R&B conglomerations of screaming girls and wannabe producers. It's simply incredible.

Here's a recent short clip of the man at work in the studio, playing everything. We suggest you waste the next 2 hours watching all his beat making, arty videos and then consider giving up your aspirations of musical breakthrough.

He's from the future, and we're lagging. That includes you.

Feature: BB Manik.

So, what are you all about?
I rap, sing and produce. I'm the CEO of Raw Riddim Records & also have a clothesline debuting later this year. My official debut album (as "B.B. Manik & the Lightning Powered Manatee) will be available in Autumn. Til then, I'll be touring throughout the country (including some festival appearances with Rolf Harris).

Who inspires you?
My two main inspirations are Michael Jackson and Pharrell Williams. I love how both of them take elements of different genres to create perfect pop music.

Who have you toured with?
I've toured with JME, Tomb Crew & Wiley to name a few, but Rolf Harris is the most famous artist I've ever toured with. He probably gave me me the biggest exposure I've ever received, as it was thanks to him I played on the main stage at Glastonbury last year. I should be playing a few festivals with him again this year.

Who was the best artist you've collaborated with?
The best artist I've worked with is Freezi. We have different styles on tracks, but we compliment each other & we always inspire friendly competition in one other. I think it means we bring out the best in each other & that ultimately means the music is better. The best artist I've worked with is Freezi. Tour memories? Spill 'em...
There's no one tour memory that stands out particularly as being wild, but in the early days of being in Tomb Crew, it was insane. We were all balancing full time jobs with gigs booked around the country at all hours of the morning. It taught us important it was to grind & stay humble. I'll never forget those times, they really helped shape the artist I am today.

Review - T4 On The Beach.

With a bottle of Glaceau vitaminwater in hand, and the morning sun already blazing, I headed across the sand for my first experience of a ‘T4 on the Beach’!

The day started with a chorus of boo’s and groans as news spread around the beach that JLS had pulled out of the gig. Further frustration for the crowd it seemed, as many were already disappointed that Jessie J had pulled out a couple of weeks back after an unfortunate accident which resulted in a broken foot.

However, the demands from JLS for a full soundcheck and stage rehearsal earlier in the morning could not be met by T4’s production team, and I think they threw their toys from the pram. I actually felt sorry for a group of teenage girls stood a couple of metres away from me... their faces were painted with the logo of JLS, whilst each sported a different colour JLS-branded hoodie – their tears gave the tide a run for its money! But by the time Olly Murs bounced on to the stage, all was forgiven and forgotten by the 50,000-strong crowd!

The beach balls were flying everywhere, and the piercing noise of female’s screaming was a little too much for me to handle, so I resorted to the safe-haven of the VIP area, with the likes of Gok Wan, Russel Kane and Michelle Keegan (stunning!), from Coronation Street.

The crowd seemed to love a solo-performance by Nicola Roberts as she sang her new single, but for me, it definitely was not the one. Although I’m fairly certain I heard the lyrics “the lights in the kebab shop make this look less hot, he’s looking like John Prescott”! Apart from the smile upon hearing those lyrics, the performance was a little lacklustre and her backing dancers left a lot to be desired if she’s looking to emulate that of her close friend, Cheryl Cole.

Music-lovers of all ages looked as though they were enjoying all that was showcased in front of them! Performance that managed to get the most hands in the air? Probably Example or Scouting For Girls – both of whom were pretty interactive, as you would imagine! N-Dubz, Chipmunk, Jason Derulo and former Britain’s Got Talent contestant, Ronan Park, all played their part in feeding the crowds the entertainment they so eagerly craved.

Cast members of The Only Way Is Essex, Skins, Coronation Street, Hollyoaks and Made In Chelsea were ever-present throughout the day, some even taking to the stage for a bit of beach banter with the crowds!

The performance of the day for me, was Aloe Blacc on one of the smaller stages. His presence, his band, his style: brilliant! Singing tracks from his new album, Good Things, he performed ‘Loving You Is Killing Me’, ‘Green Lights’ and everyone’s favourite, ‘I Need A Dolla’! That was the only time in the day that we ventured to the other stages as there was so much to fit in!

One great thing about T4 on the Beach was the amount of other things to do. Coca-Cola were on site with a double decker bus... and not just any double decker bus! The upper-level had been converted and transformed into a DJ booth, cumulating the crowds to an impromptu party, fuelled by cans of the red stuff!

The Just Dance Disco Bus joined the party too, encouraging those who think they can dance, to prove that they couldn’t – all in great spirit, of course! Impulse had a pamper zone enticing girls into their tent for a makeover for the chance to feature in a new video which will become a new form of ammunition for their social media campaign on Facebook. Rimmel and Elemis FreshSkin were also there attracting teenage girls with products and treatment samples.

The most hype and buzz was probably around the section dedicated to Glaceau vitaminwater! An old-skool American car, a Polaroid photobooth and a van that was pumping out Bob Marley throughout the day, caused quite a scene. At one point, the crowd was too large to work your way through! Bottles of the flavoured water were flying out left, right and centre - definitely a worth-while refreshment in the heat of the day - and polaroid’s were proving a massive hit too.

All in all, the day was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and there was plenty of time at the end of the day for a quick game of ‘Who Can Remember Where We Parked The Car?’ before the tide came back in.

As far as one-day musical events go, T4 on the Beach is one for music fans of any ages; even those with the most eclectic of aural interests.
